I Am, Therefore I Think

[caption id="attachment_451" align="alignright" width="164" caption="Larry Downes"][/caption] I grew up in Southeast Arizona about 70 miles south of Tucson in a farming and ranching town called Willcox. My father was a well driller. Water wells, oil wells, blast holes in the copper mines. I got to help. There is no harder job than working for your father. He’s also the toughest boss you’ll ever have. Worst of all, when he pisses you off, you still have to ride home and have dinner with him. My parents and childhood home helped shape the world view I have now. The Southwest is known for its independent attitudes. Farmers and ranchers are a self-reliant bunch or were before the government began paying them not to plant crops. Well drillers, especially oil rig roughnecks, are even more independent. The golden rule among those I grew up was, ”Live and let live.” That’s my credo today. Each of us has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Live your life as you see fit to find your version of happiness, as long as you do not violate another’s right to the same. I’ve carried those basic principles through my life, college at New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology, my early years in country radio in Albuquerque and Indianapolis and my more recent pursuits in building online strategies for various radio stations and broadcast companies. Now I occasionally get to talk with others about them and the news of the day on 93.1 WIBC in Indianapolis. I hope you’ll read the blog and tune in to the radio show from time to time.
