Do Republican’s Really Spend Less?

Not when you look at the data.

According to Veronique de Rugy of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.  Her findings are in her article, “Can We trust the GOP” in the February 2011 issue of Reason Magazine . On January 22nd I spoke with Veronique on WIBC about her research into the facts behind government spending depending on the party in charge.

Can we be hopeful that the new Republican congress will begin to reign in irresponsible government spending?  Sure we can hope. And maybe some of the new blood in the house will come through better than Republicans of the past. But without action, hope is nothing more than wishes.  To really get results, it is incumbent on us to hold our elected officials feet to the fire on spending.

We have to recognize the need to cut ALL spending , even those programs we as individuals support.  The attitude that our personal priorities must be protected from fiscal reality, is one reason we’re in the current mess.  All government spending is someone’s sacred cow which is why politicians have such a hard time cutting or eliminating programs that don’t work.  They can’t offend voters and expect to get re-elected.
