AZ Shooting Reveals the Two Greatest Threats to Our Freedom

Gabrielle Giffords, Democratic nominee and gen...

Representative Gabrielle Giffords

There was an attempted assassination of a Congresswoman in Tucson today.  It ended the lives of a 9-year-old girl, a federal judge, three other citizens and seriously wounded several others including Representative Gabrielle Giffords.  The aftermath of this disgusting act of violence has solidified, for me, the two greatest threats to liberty in America, But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Early this afternoon I was messing around on Twitter while writing a blog about the cancellation of the mini series, The Kennedys by the History Channel.  A tweet popped up saying a congress woman had been shot in Tucson.  I turned on the news channels…nothing.  I searched the news sites…nothing.  But as the minutes wore on more and more references were being made and it quickly became clear that two American tragedies were happening at once.

First there was the obvious tragedy of people being shot and killed.  An assassination attempt on a member of congress.  This is something that happens weekly 120 miles south of Tucson, but NOT HERE!

The second tragedy is worse.  On twitter I follow a lot of Libertarians, many conservatives and a few liberals.  Before we knew the name of the disgusting piece of human debris responsible for this horror I saw a tweet that said “@SaraPalinUSA,  mission accomplished” from a liberal jack wagon.  Then more and more irresponsible tweets like that from other progressives.

To their credit, the conservatives did not take the opportunity to blame an illegal alien, Mexican drug cartel or the Obama recession.  They did re-tweet the liberal vitriol citing how these liberal jerks were using a tragedy for political benefit.  I began to wonder if my conservative friends were doing the same thing.  Oh, they weren’t directly exploiting the tragedy, but they were using the predictable progressive reaction for their benefit at a time when it should have been ignored.

I grew weary of the nonsense and turned off the computer, ran some errands and went to the gym.  When I got home, I decided to ignore twitter and check  the softer side of social networking, Facebook.  I was greeted by two friend status updates that instantly galvanized my belief that our freedom is under relentless attack from two different enemies.

The first post was this link.

The comments on the Kos site blame Giffords’ opponent for the tragedy.  Great…

Then there’s this post. “A former friend of the AZ shooter tells us through Twitter: ‘As I knew him he was left wing, quite liberal. & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy.’ ”

We have no idea at this point what the shooter’s motive was, other than he’s crazy, yet both sides are looking for the smallest piece of questionable linkage to politically damage the other side.  How incredibly ghoulish.  That’s when it became quite clear.  Our liberty is under clear and present danger from two factions.

Social conservatives who believe that they know how you should live your life better than you do and want to use the power of the government to force you to live by their values.

Collectivist liberals who believe they know better how to use the  product of your life than you do and want to use the power of the government to take it from you and redistribute it as they see fit.

The rest of us, those that truly believe in liberty, who simply want to live by our own values and keep what we have rightfully earned to use to promote those things we value, are in danger of losing everything in the crossfire between these two groups of disgustingly opportunistic and dangerously irrational groups.

Rational people know one thing: the person responsible for this tragedy is the shooter.  Rational people are feeling one thing : sadness for the victims and their families.

A former friend of the AZ shooter tells us through Twitter: “As I knew him he was left wing, quite liberal. & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy.”

  1. Well said! I couldn’t agree more!

  2. Great post, Larry. And you nailed it. Politicians give you a choice between a broken arm or a broken leg. Vote for Joe and break other people’s legs – or vote for Joanne and break other people’s arms. There is obsolesce here, two choices for 300,000,000 people.

  3. Could not have said it better Larry. Not every pol behaves in way in a tragedy like this, but I think it is safe to say that most use ridiculous and irrelevant situations in ways that are counter to legitimate and serious debate.
