Our Unalienable Rights


Thomas Jefferson, and by signature 56 other Founding Fathers, declared,

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.   (complete Declaration of Independence text)


These men did not simply stir the pot with King George III and the British Parliament.  With this one sentence they exposed the true nature of mankind.  That every human being owns their life and the liberty to live it as they see fit in the quest for happiness as they define it.  Every human being knows instinctually that there life belongs to them.  That they have the choice, every choice, in determining their own actions.  We even have a name for a young person’s first recognition of this truth, “The Terrible Two’s”. 

Notice that these wise men said “pursuit of happiness”, not “to be happy”.  They knew far better than our current, so-called leaders, that we do not have a right to be happy, only the right to use our life, liberty and talents to find our happiness if we can. 

  • The concerning thing is – there are so many people who believe they are entitled to happiness and that it is the state’s job to give it to them.  
  • The frightening thing is – there are plenty of politicians willing to promise happiness to get elected then legislate your freedom away to get re-elected. 
  • The terrifying thing is – we have lost our freedoms so incrementally over the past 100 years that most don’t even realize what has been lost or what we are about to lose.


That’s what I’m going to explore in this blog.  What we’ve lost and are losing more of each day.  More important, how do we stop the freedom drain and reverse it so we can reclaim what those 56 brave and wise men made clear is ours on a hot summer day almost 234 years ago; the unalienable right to life, liberty and the product of how we use our life and talents.
